The Southern Arizona Beekeepers Association will be holding its next monthly meeting this coming Thursday, January 13, at 7:00 PM. Due to the recent upsurge in COVID cases, the meeting will be held via Zoom only. We plan to resume in-person/Zoom hybrid meetings in February if the situation improves.
The main presentation will be “Having Bees Versus Keeping Them“ by Melanie Kirby, a New Mexico beekeeper and owner of Zia Queenbee Company which she co-founded in 2005. Here is some information about Melanie:
A member of Tortugas Pueblo, she began her beekeeping career in 1997 in Paraguay where she was stationed as a Beekeeping Extension Volunteer with the United States Peace Corps. Afterward she worked for two beekeeping companies in Hawaii for the next 5 years, learning skills in commercial beekeeping and queen rearing. After Hawaii, she went to work in Florida for a migratory beekeeper where she learned about nucleus and package bee production. She was a 2019-2020 Fulbright-National Geographic Fellow and was conducting research in Spain on native honey bees there when the COVID19 pandemic altered her field research. She is currently finishing her MSc. in Entomology from Washington State University. She is active in state, regional, and national beekeeping organizations, including the Western Apicultural Society of which she is vice president.
In addition to the presentation, the evening’s program will include
- Monthly State-of-the-Hive Report
- Q&A on beekeeping topics of interest to attendees
- Vote on amendments to the SAZBA by-laws
- Election of Officers
